Westchester: Portrait of a County
Published in Paperback by Vintage Books (December, 1990)
Author: Alex Shoumatoff
Average review score:

History, cultural geography, and much more
This wonderful book is a combination of great things. Shoumatoff is a sympathetic listener and a careful reporter. Westchester County, N.Y. contains densely developed towns and commercial nodes, run-of-the-mill suburbs, gorgeous wooded areas, and lots of history. It's a detailed account, part trenchant anecdote, part careful research. For example, Westchester has more trees now than it did two hundred years ago. (Grazing animals, mainly horses, kept the woods back, then.) Shoumatoff has talked to folks, read histories, and lived there. Unlike other geographies of comparatively small places, this one is never precious or merely detail-obsessed. Rather, it's really, really good, a terrific and humane example of the genre.

Westsylvania Heritage Trail: A Guide to Southwest Pennsylvania's Historic Places (Insights (Harrisburg, Pa.).)

Great guide to western PA
I first found this book at my library, and was amazed at how many locations it covers! I was born in western PA, and grew up in central PA, but there were some intruiging places in this guide that I'd never heard of before. If you are a history buff and have a nice, lazy weekend to spend following the "history trail" as laid in this book - do it! What a nice way to fall in love with PA all over again. It'd be twice as nice to do in the fall when the leaves are changing. I logged on to Amazon.com today expressly in the hopes of ordering this book - I can't recommend it enough and am looking forward to taking it with me on regional trips in the future.

Thank god for Rutgers Press! Who else can feed me so much NJ history??!! If you are interested in the history of the towns in New Jersey, you CANNOT get away with not owning this book. I don't know how I did without it for so long! This book presents writings from the 1930s about the Garden State, giving you a good idea of what the various towns were like back then and what their history is. The book is loaded with millions of facts and figures that you won't find anywhere else. There are many photos from the era. This book is a real treasure.

Congratulations
I bought the Zagat Survey 1997 NYC Restaurant Map and the CD Rom. I loved the map, I choosed it, because two years ago I was im Rome and bought a restaurant guide that had inside a similar map, but not as good as the Zagat, and it was so useful, that I realise that all the cities must have this kind of map. You are wandering and its time of have lunch for example, so you open the map and find a good restaurant close to where you are, you don't waiste time and have a good meal. It was great in New York, I loved all you indicated. Congratulations! I am going to London, Paris and and Scotland next april and looked for something similar, unfortunately I didn't find. Do you know something of this kind that can help me?

If it was not for this annual publication, I would not have been exposed to some of what I believe to be the best restaurants in New Jersey.
